The Central Bank van Suriname was established by law in 1957. The main responsibilities of the Bank are to issue and redeem currency, maintain monetary and financial stability, supervise financial institutions, manage the foreign exchange reserves of the country and act as cashier/banker to the government and banker to the commercial banks.
The bank has the responsibility for the design of the banknotes, the denominational structure, the substrate and security features of the notes. The issues of coins is the responsibility of the Ministry of Finance, in that area the bank acts on behalf of the Ministry and is closely involved in the decision making process and takes care of all operational aspects related to the issue and redemption of coins.
The bank maintains integrity of the notes by constantly monitoring the fitness and existence of the security features. The bank also has the responsibility for a smooth functioning domestic payments system. To that end the bank regularly provides notes and coins to the commercial banks and receive their deposits for sorting and possible re-issue.
The bank is organized into three main departments; the Department of Supervision, the Department of Monetary Affairs and the Department of Banking Affairs.
